Keanu Reeves vs. Sean Young
Ok…so go with me here. I saw The Day The Earth Stood Still remake like a month ago. I didn’t even bother posting a review or what I thought of it because I enjoyed the movie but nothing regarding the story, plot devices, special effects, or acting really reached out and grabbed me strong enough to say much of anything besides, “Hey, it was fun.”
But one thing that I did walk away with was the thought that Keanu Reeves was pretty good in the movie. I don’t think the man is a bad actor, per say. But he definitely has become a bit of a caricature in our culture. The thing, though, that made me decide this was a good role for him was the same thing that made me think Arnold’s best role was that of The Terminator and Sean Young as the replicant in Bladerunner.
Seriously, if there was ever an actor that looked like every line of dialogue she delivered was painful and forced, it’d be her. But she was great in Bladerunner. She didn’t have to convey emotion. Keanu didn’t have to convey any emotion either here.
So what I am really getting at is, Keanu could have played a replicant and Sean Young could have played Klaatu. I don’t really have much of a point beyond this.
So since this isn’t a review, I’m not handing out stars but you can watch the videos below to see more of what I mean.
I’m still haunted by her performance in Ace Ventura. Haunted, I tell you!
